A double match weekend proved a challenge at the beginning of half term, with a number of first team players absent through illness and injury.
Saturday saw 10 players line up against Dalston, but we were competitive from the start with Sheelagh supporting the midfield duo of Rio and Mary, trying to find the pass for the forwards to create opportunities to score. Polly and Emily on the wings never stopped running causing defensive errors, enabling Amber to pounce onto the loose ball.
Defensively we were solid, Jill, Kim and Val controlled the majority of the situations, making clean tackles and distributing the ball through midfield.
We opened the scoring towards the end of the first half, a magnificently worked goal from a penalty corner. Trying something different Sheelagh, passed the ball back to Rio on the left post, she beautifully slipped the ball across the goal to Amber who tucked it away.
In the second half we decided to try and consolidate and not give Dalston any opportunities, it didn’t work out and they equalised. So all guns blazing we set out to try and nick the winner, so so close on a couple of occasions but we couldn’t add to the score and the game ended in a draw.
Sunday saw 11 players travel to play Penrith 1st team in a rearranged Cumbria League fixture for what we knew would be a very tough encounter!
We showed that the talent is there, some playing in positions they were unused to, and all players adapted well and improved as the game progressed.
A little slow to start, we found ourselves down in the first minute of the game, with a second soon following. But we battled on despite Penrith adding a third, and our moment arrived when Polly worked her way through the Penrith defence to slip the ball into the net between the keeper and her near post, a wonderful individual goal! Penrith unfortunately responded with a fourth just before half time.
During the second half we began to get more confidence, with Kaitlin and Olivia supporting Polly on the forward line and showing they could play at this level. In midfield Sheelagh worked tirelessly, with Megan and Jemma in support.
At the back Val was immense, cutting out numerous crosses, Jill, Holly and Kim, marshalled the opposition trying to stop them creating further chances, and Amanda, superb in goal, was able to stop some shots with what ever got in the way, feet, hands and head!
A fantastic second half but we couldn’t stop them adding three further goals at the end of the half, final score a 7-1 defeat. However, the whole team can walk away from a battling performance with their heads held high.
